FigJam alternative

Your story map needs a grid, not a template.

CardBoard is a user story mapping tool for teams who've outgrown a FigJam template. FigJam story maps are stickies and sections, so inserting a step means moving everything to its right by hand, and the Jira widget edits four fields. CardBoard keeps the backbone and release slices in a grid that makes room when you insert, and syncs title, description, status, and assignee with Jira both ways, plus Azure DevOps, Linear, Shortcut, and Trello. FigJam is the better pick when the board is a design workshop and the design files live next door.

The short version

FigJam is great for the first session. Week six is harder.

Plenty of story maps start in FigJam, because that's where the designers already are. The first session goes well: stickies go up, the backbone takes shape, everyone votes on the first release. Then the map has to keep up. A new step lands mid-journey, estimates change in Jira, and someone asks which stories slipped. On a board of stickies, every one of those is manual work.

Figma has heard the request. A 2024 forum thread asking for proper story mapping in FigJam got a pointer to upvote it. CardBoard has been a story mapping tool since 2012, when David Hussman built it alongside Jeff Patton.

Why teams switch

Three things a template can't do.

Rows and columns that hold their shape

A story map is a grid with meaning. Columns are steps in the user's day, and rows are release slices. On a FigJam template, adding a step in the middle means dragging every sticky to its right, and a forum request for auto layout in sections has been open since 2023. In CardBoard you insert the column and the map makes room.

Planning numbers make it into the tracker

FigJam's Jira widget can create issues and change assignee, priority, status, and type. It doesn't show story points, so teams planning a quarter end up re-typing estimates. CardBoard syncs story points both ways with Jira, Azure DevOps, Linear, and Shortcut. The widget doesn't reach Azure DevOps, Linear, Shortcut, or Trello at all.

An agent can do real work on the map

On the seat most PMs have in FigJam, Collab, the Figma MCP server allows up to six calls a month. CardBoard's MCP server is on every plan. An agent can read the whole map, propose new stories, and slice a release, and each change waits on the board for a member to accept.

Fair's fair

Keep the map in FigJam if:

  • The map is part of a design workshop, and you'll copy it into Figma Design files afterward.
  • You sketch and draw during sessions. CardBoard has no pen.
  • You want anonymous visitors to edit without an account. FigJam's open sessions allow that for 24 hours at a time.
  • Your workshops run to hundreds of people at once. FigJam documents 500 participants per file.
  • You live on stamps, voting, timers, and widgets from the Figma Community.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do user story mapping in FigJam?
Yes, with a template built from stickies and shapes. It works for a one-time workshop. It gets harder to maintain once the map changes often, because sections don't reflow when you insert a step, and the Jira widget doesn't carry story points or reach other trackers.
Does FigJam sync with Azure DevOps?
Not officially. Figma's Jira widget and Asana widget are the official tracker integrations. CardBoard syncs with Azure DevOps both ways, including acceptance criteria and story points.
Is CardBoard a whiteboard?
Partly. The story map is a grid that sits on a canvas, so you can still drop a sticky note, an image, or a line anywhere. There's no pen. CardBoard also has more than twenty other map types, from opportunity solution trees to process maps.
What does CardBoard cost next to FigJam?
FigJam comes with Figma's Collab seat, which starts at $3 a month billed annually on the Professional plan. CardBoard's free plan has three boards, and tracker sync starts on Pro at $10 a month billed annually. CardBoard guests are free on every plan and can edit.
